long story short, a raccoon injured my hen, pulled out all her tail feathers and bit her on the back, she has a hole that isn't bleeding but I'm afraid of infection, does anyone have suggestions or is there chicken medicine I should know about? She's quite shocked.... poor thing....
Vetericyn = miracle chicken medicine. We got a bottle at our local feed store. It is a spray on wound care cure-all. Isolate your hen - we use a dog crate. Otherwise the other little T-Rexes will peck her to death. Spray the Vetericyn on the exposed skin 2-3 times a day. We had our puppies mangle a hen just like yours and she has grown back all her feathers and is back to laying. We also had a hawk gash open another's crop. Everyone told us to euthanize her but my wife did the miracle treatment and you can't tell her from the others now. Can't recommend it enough.
Miracle medicine? The active ingredient is hypochlorus acid (household bleach to most of us).
Hypochlorous acid is a weak acid with the chemical formula HOCl. It forms when chlorine dissolves in water,
and it is HOCl that actually does the disinfection when chlorine is used to disinfect water for human use.
Save your money, and buy a bottle of bleach if you are so inclined.
