I have been planting emerite pole beans for quite a few years now. They are a french filet bean variety. Normally they do very well for me. The past couple years (new garden spot) they have been more sparse than normal as far as leaves and vigor of growing. And a majority of the beans are curling into a J shape, and often have a fat bottom and skinny top. In years past, curled beans were rare. If it matters, they are all from the same batch of seeds, and their germination has been less than normal.

I'm going to try some new seeds next year, but how can I tell if the issues might be caused by the growing conditions vs just being a bad batch of seeds?

Do you have pictures? Do they look like this one below? Maybe pull up a plant and check the root nodules. If they are few and small, light in color, that means the nitrogen fixing is not working well.

I don't have any pictures of my beans right now. I will try to get some tonight. The beans are far more curled than that. I found a picture that look similar to them from gardeningknowhow.com (see below).
