Hi there,

I've been a software engineer for 14 yrs. I took off the last year or so to learn about permaculture, off grid living, and other self-sufficiency and sustainability related topics by volunteering via WWOOF and reading books. Now, I'm beginning to look for land in the PNW to gradually build a cozy little homestead.

In January, I'm going to do a 5 week cob natural building workshop. When I get land, I want to build a simple small slip straw and cob cottage using mostly natural materials. I want to heat it with a wood stove. Over time, I'll incrementally improve it and maybe eventually build another house based on what I learn. My land will have enough trees to comfortably and sustainably heat the little house and probably a wood stove sauna later on too.

This summer, I'm going to get my PDC in Eugene, OR. I want to gradually work toward growing >70% of the food I eat. I intend to have egg laying hens, meat rabbits, a couple ducks for eggs, and a large garden.

Periodically, I'd visit and volunteer on various eco villages to learn from them, meet more like-minded folks, and help them out with projects they're working on. Gradually, I'd like to move away from programming and into a career around helping other people become more self-sufficient--building their own houses, growing their own food, buying fewer things, etc.

I'm excited about all that, but what would make it even more fun would be to find a nice lady to do it all with! If you think that sounds like a fun life, send me a message

Bump! Hey there from McKenzie river. You are in an awesome place when it comes to Homesteading. I hope you can find some land that’s affordable . Take care, and I hope you find a lady, the area has many IME, and if they are here on Permies, they’re already in the right place, just like you! Bump!

Hello John,

Not a partnership match but I have a 34 acre homestead a little north of Seattle so would welcome a visit and future collaboration.  You can learn a bit more about what I'm doing by looking at my post in this forum from a couple months ago.

Hey John, sounds like fun! I wanted to host tech free meetups or create a tech free space, help people get away from modern technology (anything that requires electricity) and have a lifestyle without it myself. If that sounds aligned with your goals, perhaps we could team up!

Fellow permie PNW software engineer here! Not a lady, but I'd love to connect as friends and do some skill-share. You can read more about my situation in my bio.

Ms. Banana, yes I am real lol. What makes you ask? However, I may have met the lady I've been searching for a few weeks ago. So I'm going to see about trying to remove this post or mark it resolved or something.

Thanks, JP! Sounds like you have a rad setup! Good luck to you too.

Hi John,

Wishing you the very best of luck on your journey. What you’re building sounds thoughtful, grounded, and full of purpose. One of the fundamental ingredients of permaculture is time — things rarely happen overnight — but maybe that’s also part of its beauty.

The best reward, in the end, is the happiness of knowing that you’re doing something good for yourself, for your family, and for the community around you.

I really love seeing so many of us starting new paths in this direction. It gives me hope. I’d love to look back in a few years and see that, together, we managed to change the world at least a little bit.

Wishing you a beautiful path ahead.

Roble (Spain)
