I'm cutting my coppice firewood from last year (I know, well behind!) and noticed that the inner bark of the Aspen (populus tremula) seems to be very fibrous.

As it has been outside for a year in the wet there isn't any strength in the fibres, but I wondered if it were possible that it was useful fresh. Anyone know whether this is the case and have experiences to add? I'll have to see if I am coppicing any this year. Last year was the first year I had some big enough to be worth cutting, but they seem to grow more quickly with shelter, so are generally doing better now.
