Broken binoculars

I dropped and broke my wife’s binoculars. That’s not cool, obviously, but after doing some research and buying an upgrade replacement, it was time to throw the old ones away. So of course, I took them apart to see how they work.

I don't have any kind of background in optics, but I think what's happening is that the prisms are bouncing the light back and forth so that a relatively short lens gets to act like it's three times as long, enhancing the magnification effect in exchange for a slight loss of fidelity. And I'm pretty sure the replacement I bought doesn't do that. It's longer in the hand and seems like a straight shot with no room for the extra channels. It's also crisper but maybe a little slower to focus. Hopefully that last bit is just a matter of getting used to it.
