if we didn't have free will then why would we need to be comforted?

Just because you have no free will doesn't mean that comforting would have no effect. Think of yourself like a computer, sure your computer could pop up a different website than it does when you punch in permies.com, but it doesn't, because of the set and sequence of input it has recieved and how that patern interacts with the patterns within it.
