Maybe, not all dogs are built the same.  

That aside, consider how Anatolians exist in their home world, herding and guarding flocks under their care.  They are not fed. They are left to fend for themselves. It's what they know and do. Even when they don't have pots, pans, campfires and personal cooks.

They not only fare well, they do it keeping wolves and even big cats at bay.
