Chicken Caravans on Kickstarter

An Australian inventor has created a chicken caravan for free range egg producers. He needs to raise another $90,000 in 7 days on Kickstarter to proceed with the project.

These are very clever designs based on extensive experience that are huge time-savers for high volume free range egg producers, although they can also be used for meat birds.

Anyone raising chickens for eggs will get some inspiration and useful ideas by taking a look at what has been incorporated into these clever designs.

This can't be serious. I mean no offense; but am I to take seriously a business plan that intends to ship chicken coops half way around the world, expecting to be 'value added'?

I am all for free markets, and if this guy thinks he has a chicken coop so special people will pay for a 'commercial' coop design shipped ten thousand miles to one's door, more power too him. However, people have been building chicken coops for a good long while. I don't think he has come up with a proprietary design so special it warrants the extra costs.

I'm assuming that Daniel will be shipping units initially to test the market. It would make sense for U.S. units to be built in the U.S. once there is sufficient demand, but you have to start somewhere to see if there is a market, and then make future decisions accordingly.

That looks like an interesting product for someone wanting to get started on pastured eggs right away. However, as Jack pointed out the price may be tough in a market not known for particularly high margins. It looks like their caravans run about US$55 per bird space (plus shipping) so the time to re-coop* the cost will be many years. As a point of comparison, the Salatin eggmobiles run about $5 per bird space and others have reported similar costs.

On the plus side with the Caravans, your neighbors won't think you're hauling around something straight out of Mad Max...
