Has anyone had any experience or know of anyone who has had chaga tea/infusion while nursing? I have a 3 month old son, and my husband and I just foraged some and I want to get in on the benefits of the glorious fungus, too! None of either my instincts or material I have read about chaga have given me any indication it would not be safe, but it's better safe than sorry, as they say. Thanks!

If you're breastfeeding, don't. You can dry the fungus for later use.
Be certain that its the fungus!! Check !!
Otherwise dry and consume in little portions, just incase of allergies.

Although I don't have direct experience with wildcrafting Chaga, I do know that this species has several confusing lookalikes. I agree with Dirk- be careful about the ID and be sure to dry some material for future study. Here is a link to a pair of articles about Chaga lookalikes in Fungi magazine:

This magazine also has an entire issue devoted to Chaga that would be well worth checking out for anyone interested in the healing properties of the species.

Here's my experience with Chaga during pregnancy. I just gave birth to a healthy baby naturally at home a couple weeks ago. My partner and I were living in the mountains up in New Hampshire and happened to find a lot of chaga. We weren't trying to conceive, however we are young and healthy. We drank chaga tea everyday from the mushrooms we foraged in the woods. To our surprise, I got pregnant .. pull out method doesn't always work. I think us both drinking chaga may have contributed to increased fertility and conception, she's a chaga baby. During the first trimester I had absolutely no interest in drinking chaga, my morning sickness was really bad and all of a sudden I just didn't want anything to do with it. Interesting to note, because before becoming pregnant I loved the taste. Later in the pregnancy as my morning sickness faded I enjoyed drinking Chaga again and now I'm drinking it while breastfeeding. Then it crossed my mind when researching herbs to avoid while breastfeeding, is chaga is safe to drink? Of course there's no "research" to determine whether or not it is safe and thus better to avoid consumption. Hmmmm I'm not convinced and think it could actually be incredibly beneficial and enhance nutrition to baby. Is anyone else drinking chaga while nursing ? I'm sure its fine, why wouldn't it be?

@Earth Child
I'm doing some research on Chaga and breastfeeding as well. And I agree with you I can't help but think that it could only be super beneficial. Especially if we just take a normal amount everyday or every other day the baby should get a small amount of it in the milk. Especially with your experience of becoming pregnant while taking it and still having some throughout your pregnancy it sounds safe to me. Might do my own little experiment hehe

This made me LOL. My son is a maca baby. Congratulations on a healthy birth, btw.

I don't have specific experience with chaga, but I have been frustrated by the dearth of information on which plants/weeds/herbs are ok/safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. A couple of things I have found that are helpful in solving these riddles when you can't find specific studies--one, check to make sure that the herb in question isn't an emmenagogue, aka contains compounds that can stimulate the uterus and encourage bleeding. Two, see if you can find out whether this herb is known to cause liver damage; this can be confusing, since studies on things like comfrey or yarrow have been a bit skewed. But if you can find someone(s) who have used it for years, that's another great resource that might help you make your decision. Researching traditional uses and restrictions of the herb can also be enlightening.
