What is the difference between a farmstead and a homestead?

This may just be semantics, but the way I understand it a farmstead is a small scale commercial operation while a homestead is where most of the production is meant to be consumed onsite.

Near as I can tell the definitions make them largely interchangeable. Probably should ask people using farmstead what it means to them.
