breeds for beginners

For a beginner, which breeds do you recommend? Should I consider goats as well as cows?

I don't think that breed matters for a beginner. The first cows I milked were Brown Swiss. You just want nice cows when you're a beginner.

As for goats vs cows, that is a totally different question that I approach from an ecological standpoint. If you have pastures, then you want cows. If you have a lot of brush/bushes, then you want goats. Cows and grazers and goats are browsers. Of course, cows browse and goats graze, but fundamentally they each have an ecological identity that should be honored for optimal efficiency.
