Making a hive out of a barrel

I have a lot of barrels and I found an instructional for making a hive. I'd really like to do it. The question is about the barrels. They were used to hold car wash liquid. They were used as water barrels before I got them. I'd clean them thoroughly but would they still be toxic?

plastic barrels, I assume?

cheap and easy. maybe not ideal, but what's your priority?

possible concerns: offgassing or leaching of plasticizers. impermeability to water might cause issues. residue of the previous contents.

Yup. Plastic. It is cheap since I happen to have the stuff already. Easy might be up in the air as I think buying a built one would be easier.
