Mobile Chicken house

I'm going to post a few pictures of my chicken house on wheels. The design was inspired by a family members coupe. Soon I will be moving to a hard wooded forest area and the mobility factor will be awesome. At the moment we are crashing at a friends house and they are in about a 1/4 acre of yard with a heavy border of weeds that I have allowed to manifest.

This is so close to being finished, I am hoping the post will encourge me to completion. I need to paint the trim, finish a window for summer ventilation, complete the nest box lid and possibly add mobility features such as watering pipes, feed pipes and automatic door.

The floor space is 4 feet x 10 feet

I seem to not follow the process to well in pictures here. Most likely as I had a bout of changes. I also mounted the sides, then removed for pictures.

I think you get the point anywho!

That door area in the last picture is to allow inside access to egg box and catch all the eggs that miss the box and also possible a winter feed / water access.

See how I changed the front into a storage, much better.

I also remember how cold it was, could be one more reason for lack of pictures.

The chickens roost fairly high into the ceiling area. This allows for a warmer winter night.

The floor is a hardware cloth so no bedding to gather moisture or clean

I had to deploy the house as the "temp" house wasn't doing a good job in the middle of winter. We were in between homes and so were the girls.

The entrance is the ramp the lowers / raises from the floor. This works well but does take some critical space from the foot print.

During the transition I was glad to have not completed the nest boxes as this served well as an entrance to the strange place. It took the girls about 5 nights to fully transition. I would close the EDPM door at night for safety.

This temporary place is very windy! Had to add a curtain of EDPM, actually was a fantastic idea and worked very well. kept the house about 12 degrees above ambient and humidity was not an issue. The curtain was easily pulled off a few screws and was folded up and placed in the front storage area after winter. PERFECT!

I keep the temp housing around through the winter.

Hey look an egg box!

Looks the same today. Just not sure how I want to finish the lid. I like the rubber. The left over roof pieces just don't allow for it to fully open. Still thinking....

Oh and I have finished the window above the egg box but can't seem to find any pictures, it opens up from the bottom and seals well when closed.

Its a bit heavy to move around on anything but flat ground. The mower does a fine job.

I didn't give any detail to this feature, we will call it a recovery door. I have framed one of the side panels and cut and installed it ever so that it will come out with two screws. Turns out I have taken this off and placed hardware cloth in its place during the summer for more ventilation. I will turn this into a permanent door / full window.

The front storage is completely sealed up to keep critters from making it a home.

I have added hooks to the side to allow for fast installation of a tarp, which is tied out to a tree to provide an awning. This feature must be expanded as it is needed and has potential.

Cleaning is now amazing as maybe every 4 months I take a rake and flip it upside down and knock a few of clumps through.

I am considering using a piece of EDPM to lay under the house to allow for collection of poo as I will feel a great void without it in my compost area.

The low profile does a good job of keeping it from flipping.

Currently it sleeps 9 girls, better ventilation and I would feel comfortable adding at least 5 more, maybe more. In the winter, no problem with more.


I just picked up a small wagon kit to repeat this for my mom who just got 6 chicks. New Post to follow........
