Hey everyone. My name is Tegan and I'm currently residing in Waukee Iowa which is a suburb of Des Moines.

My husband and I are saving up for a down-payment on land that will become my full time job. We'll remain living in our home in the suburbs but I'll be pulling a 9 to 5 out on the land. The first year or two years will be spent improving the land and infrastructure. Then we'll start slowly introducing livestock. Our plans right now include a fruit/nut orchard, chickens, pastured pigs and milk goats.

We realize not living on the land we'll be "farming" is not ideal, but it's what we need to do to make things work for our family. I'll be picking your brains I'm sure and reading a lot of past posts to make our tiny "farm" a success, and to keep our livestock as healthy, safe, and natural as possible.

Hi Tegan! Welcome to permies!

I'm very excited to hear that you two are interested in permaculture! For a good introduction to a variety of permaculture techniques, I advise watching Paul Wheaton's Permaculture Keynote. Some other good intros are Mark Sheppard on Restoration Agriculture and Geoff Lawton's Videos.

For more resources for self-education, please visit the Guide to Getting Help on Projects. This thread also lists tools and resources helpful for the design process.

We, here at permies, look forward to hearing your questions and watching your progress. You can start a thread to log your progress on your site at the Projects subforum and many other projects, too! Happy to have you here!
