Newbie preparing to homestead

Hello,

I need advice where to start. Any suggestions on threads or podcast is greatly appreciated. I also want to know what is the most cost efficient way to build a home? I am torn between slip form and log.

From my own life experiences, the cheapest way for us to get a house was....
1- build as much of it that we could by ourselves.
2- downsize!!!

The smaller the building, the less it can cost, as long as you don't get fancy. I built ours to be functional but minimalistic. We also choose local materials when it was an option. Local often meant cheaper in cost.

What is your skill level and budget? That is a huge decision maker in determining what route to take when building. Oftentimes people jump into things - which can be fine if they are huge risktakers but many homesteaders move back to town because it was too tough. Learn skills. Start small and move from there. It's more work than you anticipate - although rewarding. We have a YouTube channel so of course we'd recommend that but go to mother Earth news fairs, homesteading fairs, check out your local extension offices, take classes on the building methods you think you like so that you can determine what is feasible and what you might want to live with. At these classes and fairs you'll meet others so that may lead you in a direction your can't imagine.

This video is exactly what I am looking for. I have already ran into a problem where I live. I just found out that I have water restrictions in my state, so I have to be careful about the county I buy land in.

My sibling just bought a really nice RV, and suggested that I go that route first for housing.
