A friend of a friend bought 40000 acres of quite marginal land near Vanderhoof British Columbia. Many considered it of no use whatsoever. The legal restrictions surrounding wetlands, made it not an ideal property for logging or other purposes. Still, there was a tax burden on such a large property. He made a deal with Ducks Unlimited to improve the property and make it useful to them.

He got a free house to live in and was paid to be the caretaker. Because the land was set aside for wildlife, The Province cut them a deal on the taxes. Ducks Unlimited pays the taxes and they pay for all maintenance issues.
