I was looking around the net for the cheapest land markets in America and stumbled across this gem. http://www.freelandks.com/

Didn't know if anyone had mentioned it before, but it seems that if you can last a year there, then the land is yours. Pretty sweet deal to me, and hey, for those wanting to start up a community with many permies all about, this would be a place ripe for the pickings.

If you are selected to receive a free home site and you accept the
offer, you will be required to sign an agreement that requires you to
show evidence that you will be able to begin construction of your home
within 120 days. You must have the financial means to construct the
home. If you do not have the financial means to construct your home,
you may need to qualify for a loan from a financial institution. You will
be required to live in your home for at least 12 months. There are
some requirements and restrictions for the type home you construct.

The link posted above is not working at the moment...but for those looking for FREE land, Wheaton Labs has a program where you can do just that. Watch and learn! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dORqYPTC-LM
