Minga Skill Building Hub is hosting another amazing workshop! Come join us to learn how to build a cob oven.
When: June 25 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Where: 60 Manitoba St., Guelph, ON N1E 3B9
Cost: $125.00
Wood fired pizza, fresh baked breads, slow cooked meats and tasty sweet treats; they can all be done with a single firing of a thermal mass cob oven over an afternoon. Join Adam Krop, experienced cob builder, as he teaches all the steps necessary for you to build your very own cob oven (cob is a mixture of sand, clay, and straw).
A cob oven is a thick monolithic domed structure that gets heated from the inside with a wood fire. The thermal mass of the oven walls gathers and stores the heat and the wood fire is removed (or pushed aside). Then the oven is ready for baking as it slowly releases the radiant heat for hours.
During this workshop, the cob will be mixed with your feet, and stacked with your hands. It is the simplest, low cost, low embodied energy and infinitely recyclable building material around and it can be enjoyed by both young and old alike.
You will learn:
How to identify, test and amend your local soils to make it suitable for building
The “burrito” roll mixing technique and how to stack and stitch your mud into a solid mass
How to lay a fire brick base, insulate below it, mould options to create the oven void, and detail your oven for efficiency and long life
You will want to attend this workshop if:
You want to build your own wood fire oven and want guidance on how to start
You don’t mind rolling up your sleeves and getting a little (or a lot) dirty.
You are interested in natural building
You want an introduction to the fundamental principles of building with mud and detailing so you can take on more complex projects
You want a hands-on experience working and building with cob
