This is an interesting and informative article I found in BackHome Magazine the September/October 2010 issue. 

The article shows how to make a platform out of secured railroad ties (five or six) to some long 4X4's.  Between the railroad ties place tie down straps with clamps.  Next place your skinny wood (saplings, wood scraps, etc) across the railroad ties.  Next, cinch up the straps and use your chain saw.  Instantly you have nice little bundles of firewood cinched up in individual packets!

Interesting...I was thinking "clamp" in the sense of "earthen kiln," from the headline.

Neat idea! A lot more practical than what I had imagined.
