People who have traveled to affected regions need to be extremely vigilant against mosquito bites when they return home, especially during the first 10 days.

Infectious disease experts are watching Puerto Rico closely, because it’s a major tourist destination that’s closely connected to the mainland. There are more than 100 daily direct flights between the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Nearly 40 cruise ships, each carrying thousands of passengers, pass through the Port of San Juan each week. And according to the government-run Puerto Rico Tourism Company, about 90% of people who fill the hotels on the island are Americans.
