We all know this feeling. You're busy, and a little hungry, but too busy to eat. If only there was something simple I could just drink, like a soda! Just pop the cap and get those easy calories...but...If only there was something healthier than corn syrup...
Oh yeah! There totally is. Enter atole. Atole is a corn based beverage invented by those lovely people down South. At its simplest, atole is just a bit of masa in hot water. At its most complex atole is masa & milk, sugar & spices, together in a real proper dessert drink.
My typical atole is three tablespoons (about 1/4 cup) of masa harina, added slowly while stirring (to prevent clumping) to an ordinary sized mug of hot water. It's about 110 calories, comparable to [insert sugary substance here] in a portable easy to drink beverage.
What a healthy way to drink your corn! No HFCS. No stimulants. Just delicious corn tea.
Surely I'm not the only one here to have enjoyed atole.
I was also wondering if there are other similar grain based beverages invented by other cultures. Buckwheat atole?
