I just updated the base plan of our property and I used google SketchUp. I had to fiddle a bit around until I got a scaled plan and wrote up what to do:

I think it is very improtant to sit down with a piece of paper (a roll of transparent sketching paper)  (not the computer)!
I always cringe when I see these terrible computer sketches - I literally can see how difficult it was to do these. You can draw fast by hand and it has something to do with right and left brain hemisphere - you need both to plan. I even attached a photo of the tool which I like!
