using chickens to compost

Scraps from the kitchen go inside the wire cage with a couple handle fulls of leaves. Chickens get to eat whatever they want from the scrapes while mixing the greens and browns up really well.
Save a little on chicken feed.
Save a lot on not buying some stupid commercially made composter system thing.
Make great compost with extra nitrogen from chicken poop.
Keep chickens from destroying compost pile.

we use chickens to make compost as well here, a little bit different method though. our chicken area is quite sloped., in one area i made a compost bin, three walls the back being on the lowside. all i have to do is go out, toss the scraps in there, toss weeds, toss leaves, sticks, whatever. they scratch, shred, poop. all i have to do is once a week return it to the bin again and let them, aerate all over.

some of my best compost is made this way. its really rich and fertile and all i had to do was push it downhill into the bin i made. it also can make quite a bit of compost fast if you add enough matertials.

Soil: Are you saying that there is are two side walls, one front wall, and no back wall? Where the back wall should be is the side that slopes down hill? When the chickens scratch, poop, and shred it, the matter ends up down hill, and then you return the matter back to the bin that you had previously put in the bin the week before?

I read in one book,  I think it was magic muck, that in the old days animals were part of the composting processs, they reduce the food waste to a mush and add enzymes to it.      Trouble is they stop you going anywhere and are time consuming, though amusing. agri rose macaskie.

i think the open side faces uphill?
