Wish I knew anything about them. We talk about our gardens at work and will bring fresh veggies or herbs for others to try. These were brought in one day. The weird part is that no one knows (or admits to) what they are or that they brought them in. Beyond any suspicions, I would still like to know what they are.
Were they at the top of tall stalks coming out of a rosette of narrow, long tough leaves?
Edit...Rereading I see that they weren't still on the plant when gathered? I doubt they would have been just laying on the ground if it was yucca...ours always hung on to the seed pods themselves even after spitting the seeds.

Those are yucca seed pods. Yucca propagates by two methods, seeds and shoots coming up from the roots. Yucca are very hard to get rid of so be wise about where you plant them.
