Some good fungi resources according to Mother Earth News (Aug/Sept 2010 issue):
Work by author paul stamets
For help with shitake cultivation: "Growing shitake mushrooms in a continental climate" by Joe Kozak and Mary Ellen Krawczyk
"Shitake growers handbook" by Paul Pryzbylowicz and John Donaghue.
For help with identification: "North American Mushrooms: A field guide to edible and inedible fungi" by Dr. Orson K Miller Jr and Hope H Miller.

Also, you can join a local mycological society, and find a local mentor
