car leaking (steering) fluid, smoking, resolved with clutch replacement too

Mmmm... No. They replaced the clutch too. Sigh. He felt bad about the price of the parts. He did charge the correct amount. I checked the prices before calling any repair shops. I think that's why he did not charge for doing the cable for us as well.

It sounds like something got on a hot surface, which is definitely a concern, but good to hear it wasn't an extreme situation. The fact that you didn’t notice anything unusual with brakes, steering, or shifting is a good sign that it might not be something catastrophic. A few things to check:
Fluid Leaks
Brake Pads or Calipers
Exhaust or Oil Leak
Transmission Fluid
