sheet mulch, hugelkultur draw insects?

Can anyone tell me if sheet mulch or hugelkultur beds filled with wood chips would draw roaches and crickets? I know all living creatures have their place in the world, but I can't stand the thought of supporting a large roach population in my garden. Ugh!

Lizards and snakes will move in to eat the roaches and crickets, and if you add a little pond, you'll probably get frogs and toads.  The roaches that live in mulch don't tend to want to come into the house.  We have lots of wild roaches in the yard and get maybe 2-3 in the house each year.  Crickets also will tend to want to stay out in the yard where you will have made a lovely habitat for them compared to the relative sterility of the average house. 

Well, I'm glad they'll stay outside, but I'd rather they would live somewhere else. I really, REALLY hate both roaches and crickets. Just a personal phobia.

I hate scorpions and kissing bugs and they both seem to like to come in the house! 

I rarely see either the roaches or the crickets unless I dig around under the mulch.  They don't tend to skitter around on the surface.

That's good to hear. I was really worried about them multiplying in the mulch.

We moved away from a neighborhood full of scorpions - there was no getting rid of them no matter how many chemicals used. I had some container veggies there and when I would move a pot there might be a dozen scorpions under it. Creepy! Now we live out in a town out in the desert and no one seems to have scorpions! We were thrilled to be able to walk around the house barefoot and not have to turn the lights on first. Seriously thrilled! I've stepped on a scorpion in the house and it was just  little worse than a wasp sting, but they are so horrible looking. Nightmare bugs! 

When we moved in last fall we had so many crickets it was hard to believe! If we went out into the backyard and turned a flashlight on the dead grass, it looked like the ground was moving. Gross!!! The house was empty for a year but the inside was remarkably bug free. We will probably always have to use bug spray around the outside of the house to keep the black widow population down but I don't anticipate using it in the yard or garden. Hopefully something will eat the crickets and roaches.

Sure wish we could have chickens! They eat bugs, make fertilizer and give you eggs for breakfast. I need to find out what the very quietest variety is and go to our HOA with the info and beg. I don't understand why the neighbors can have 2 large dogs who bark all the time but I can't have a few chickens. I would give anything to have acreage, but alas, it is not to be.
