I have a young wether (goat) that has a bit of a respiratory infection going on. no fever so I don't think it is major but I was looking for something that might be good to support him a little while he fights it off. I would like to try something natural before I break out the big guns!

for humans there's mullein! I wonder how well that translates to goat world. Maybe sick goat would drink a mullein infusion after it has cooled off.

hmmm. I have never heard of it before. A quick google turned up that it is indeed used for respiratory problems and some parts of the plant can be used like coumadin as well as being used to paralyze fish!!! interesting. Goats have a much higher metabolism and tend to need 2-4 x the dose that most animals need of a given medication. Is this something that I could come by at a health food store?

It's at some health food stores, but they'd have to be pretty herb-oriented. An herbal shop is a better bet. Or of course if you could find a patch, you could probably harvest plenty, as swaths of it grow in one place.
I just stole this pic from google images

Hi, I have goats and I have had good results with feeding them fresh plants that would help a particular issue and have also given them tincture by squirting a little in a some grain.  For respiratory issue, you could feed them some wild blackberry leaves, wild rose hips (anti-viral) lemon balm, onion, chives, you could even see if they would eat echinacea flowers.  Animals are pretty close to the earth and so know what they need.  I don't know about mullein, you could try that but that isn't one of the ones I would choose first off.  With tinctures, I have given them Echinacea, wild rose and St. Joan's wort.
Glad to hear they are feeling better.
Peace, Julie

thank you crows daughter! good to know for future reference. I'm not sure what was up with the little guy. A touch of bacterial pneumonia or something. No one else has come down with anything like it so....
