tons of clover growing in yards this year why?

Probably wetter weather than usual. Could just be less use of chemicals.

In the south we have had a very wet late winter and a wet and warmer than normal spring, this combination has allowed the clovers to shine and pop up everywhere there have been dormant seeds waiting for such an event.
I would bet most of the clover you are seeing is yellow flowered (it is on my farm) this is one of the pioneer plants, it will not hurt anything but it will fix nitrogen in the nodules along with providing bees with needed nectar.
This species of clover will diminish as we get into our hot, humid, summer pattern.
