Let me know if this makes sense or sounds like a terrible plan. I rely on rain water through out the seasons I have a gutter system to a holding tank and it gives me plenty of water until I hit deep winter. I always have a plethora of solar energy left over each day even when I have a over cast day or two. I had the idea of putting heat tape in my gutters and make a alternative holding tank on the inside so that the internal heat will keep it from freezing. Also the cabin heat will slowly thaw snow and ice off the roof and if I can keep the gutters just warm enough to keep it flowing I might be able to sustain better. I would just have to make sure I could divert into the internal holding and have a blowoff incase I get to much. I don't want to flood the living quarters. Dose this sound like madness?

Where are you, and how cold is it?

I think the heattape makes sense, but would probably try insulating a tank placed against a wall before I would put one inside...
