First, not sure even if it is possible to fully drain it... They come with a ball valve on the bottom so even if I shut it off, and then disconnect the pipe that run inside the cabin, there will still be water right before the ball valve of the tank. Look at a Google image of a tote tank and tell me what you think.

Second, if I go there in January for a weekend and connect it so I can use it - then water might be in the pipe for an entire night....

Is this correct?

Hey,

I want to set up a rain collection system in my weekend cabin. It will be used for showers and sinks - no drinking.

i would love to use one of those 375g tote tanks and leave it above ground. I then wish to use an RV pump to feed from the tank into the house....

The problem is - it seems like it won't work in winter because it will freeze or am I missing something?

I read that because it is 375g it won't become a soild block of water but instead just the top will freeze. So even if that is the case - then the pipe that will run between the tank and the cabin, even if I place the tank right up against my cabin, will have water in it and that will freeze and break right? How can I avoid having water in there?

Of course I can empty it when I leave but if I use it and then go to sleep - it could still freeze and break during the night.

Any help? btw - I will have solar so no warming blankets are possible.

I am building a recreational cabin in the woods. I would like to use a compost toilet but have a few questions to convince the wife (I am sure these might have been asked but I believe my situation - recreational - is not that common here)

This is my current plan... please crtique:
Our cabin will be used for on weekends (friday night until sunday after noon) between 2-3 times a month. I would like to build a 5 gallon bucket system with saw dust / peat. I will run a vent up the roof for the compost toilet and try my best to have a design that is sealed. Now I will be able to pee out doors as much as I can but my wife won't. Then the bucket will have poop and some pee in it. When it gets full: I thought I could just close it with a lid, add some soil and earthworms (I have a vermi compost at home and can bring some) and then let it sit in the forest closed for a year. Then after a year - just empty it in the forest. I will just rotate buckets of course.

Will this work?
Can you compost like this (closed with lid) or will I find some smelly stuff when opened after a year?
Do I need to have vents on the sitting bucket?
Any other rec's /comments?

Hey,

I need to build a tiny cabin (12x12' with lofted area - ceiling is 13') so I do not want to spend too much time learning about how to build a mass stove correctly and then building one myself.....

I was wondering if there is anyone here who knows or is himself capable of building one. I will obviously pay for the work, be on site to give a hand, and help with bringing in the materials and such...

My land is located about 30min north of port jervis NY.

Thanks

Hello everyone,

I am not sure if I am posting in the right place.

I am in the process of building an off the grid tiny cabin. I am sizing my solar system and found out that my mini fridge will so much power that I could get a system a quarter the size if I went without it.

Now, I am trying to find out if I can maybe make an "ice box" or faux fridge myself. Anyone read or know anything about doing something like that?

This cabin will be used every other weekend and we can bring ice packs/ ice bottles with us for the weekend. I thought about making a super insulated box or cabinet that I will then place the cold pack into.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

PS - I read about the chest fridge thing but I am not sure I want to take that route also I learned that that method with the external thermostat has issues.

Thanks!

Hey there!

I live in Brooklyn NY and I bought a piece of land in upstate NY to build a nature gateway for me and my wife. I am going to be off grid and I want to start buying the many solar components I need for my system. Anyone knows a good supply store for 'all things solar' anywhere near me? (NY,LI,NJ, and so on)...

Thanks!!!

Hi All,

I am planning the construction of my cabin and I'd like to use a RMH. I do not want to have an elaborate design but rather something which is very simple to built and is quite idiot proof.

Any help will be appreciated. BTW - I found this regular wood stove for sale at home depot:http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202398323/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=barrel%20stove&storeId=10051

Will it be possible to easily convert it into a rocket mass one?

Also, if it will be possible to put some more effort into the build to be able to heat water in the cabin as well (showers and so on) I will love to learn about it.

Thanks!!!
