Currently reading Folk of the Air by Peter S. Beagle. I keep a number of fantasy novels piled on my water closet tank.

What I’ve had in my mind for a couple months now is building an intentional community of households within my neighborhood and adjacent neighborhoods. I just moved into a house in town about 30 minutes away from where I was in a more rural area with a good bit of land around me. There are so many households/neighborhoods/communities with too few resources and that have been struggling for a long time. My dream and hope is that existing communities can come together as a homestead providing for each other and creating new resources for those most in need, such as children who don’t get a meal every day even though parents are working multiple jobs. What holds me back is basically not knowing how to approach my new neighbors with this idea.

Hey there! I’m in Lafayette and as far as I’m aware, there’s a good chance you’ll find folks around here. I know of one small homestead in Scott, LA, but the small farmers markets I’m around Laf are budding with wonderful folks. I hope this finds you well. Take care!

So, instead of a man made material, why not give willow or some other lower density logs a try? Bind them together into a raft, leaving enough space between logs to allow some water plants to potentially establish themselves in the cracks. Anchoring them if possible may also be helpful.

Gilbert, I'm wondering if you had just short of a full step's space every few feet down the length of the chinampa, while keeping the smaller chinampas connected below the surface, you could maintain decent water circulation.

This is an interesting idea. Perhaps mixing seed with down and cattail fluff would be effective. I've made a small dream pillow with a number of fragrant herbs in cotton cloth. Doubling the fabric might help reduce any amounts of plant dusts getting through.

Lars Hollmer, Robbie Basho, Kevin Yazzie, Captain Beefheart, Sleep's 'Holy Mountain', Jacob do Bandolim... I could go on and on. I listen to these musicians because I'm a lousy composer myself, and they mostly do a swell job getting the feelings inside me moving.

that sounds like a pretty good method you've got! i've read that soaking them then drying them shrinks the meat to make shelling easier...
but i believe i'll try your method instead. there's still literally tons of red acorns around my home and where i work. i'm actually rather fond of the little grubs you find in acorns. the fat one's especially. they're pretty easy to spot before cracking them open. thanks for your reply!

So I've gathered acorns from two quercus nigra about 15 miles apart from each other and have soaked them for over 12 hours and the acorns are now drying. my goal is to make any amount of flour and use it to make a small cake, possibly with blue berries grown near my house. i know i probably should just wait until the experiment is done with to post but I'm kind of hoping for tips or ideas from anyone who may have done this before. I will crack them tomorrow and begin leaching tannins. I'm hoping it'll amount to a cup or so. AFter shelling I will crush them slightly, then put into bucket with water.
if i remember by the time i'm done, i will post results.

I wonder if they got any unique flavors from using the ox hides. Thanks for the advice on the mead.
I am going to need some more experience before I start thinking about all this too much....
