I love my bike. I never drove a car until I was 30. Now at 60, I still enjoy walking and even though, I am half mile back in the bush, I have, for the most part, been without a car for 3 years. I do rely on my neighbours to pick up the odd thing for me when they go to town. I reciprocate with favours that they need. In winter, my first preference is walking, then x-country skiing and lastly, snowshoeing into my property. I do have a trusty old Yamaha Bravo snowmobile to get me around when I need it. I find the walking really keeps me in shape. And although my holistic diet has a lot to do with it, I'm happy to say I don't have any of the hip or knee issues that my counterparts complain about so even though I'm getting my own car this week, you will still find me walking all over the place whenever I can.

No shortage of people looking for someone like you, that's for sure. If you're at all interested, you'd be roughing it, but we have the shell of the house-in-progress, to live in, and are growing food, foraging, natural building, fishing, hunting, living off grid, aiming to finish the main house, then a sauna, eventually having some camp sites at the river, insulated tiny bunkhouses and cater to eco-tourism with passive recreation while operating on a barter system. There's potential paid work around. I'm interested in trading meals and accommodations for help with all the things mentioned above and general help around the place (gardening, firewood, forest management, snow clearing, etc.) You'd get your own bunky. It's a 30 minute drive to the nearest store and we're in L'Outaouais (the Ottawa Valley), Quebec. 2 hours from Ottawa.

Hi Daniel, sounds like you're on a good path. I certainly don't regret taking the permieroute.

Do you mind if I ask, you're from the southeast of where?
May I suggest reading up on Rudolph Steiner and biodynamics in particular. The theories, if I have it right are based on the fact that things that contain water, like almost everything, are influenced by the pull of the moon. I follow a biodynamic calendar and have basic biodynamic 101 knowledge but my question remains, why would the brightness of the moon be an indicator of anything if the pull is magnetic? Wouldn't the moon influence molecular matter regardless of the moon being in the shadow of the earth or not? This leads me to question how much influence the energy of the sun really has, besides the light spectrum that we can see.

I'm in the process of developing my off-grid woodland homestead in the beautiful Ottawa Valley. I work nearby, at an outfitters. My interests encompass things that allow me to live lightly off the land, be self-sufficient and avoid the need, as much as possible for public health and industrial food by growing my own and wild foraging of food and medicine. Currently, I'm hand-building a timber frame lodge with cordwood masonry and an earth roof usiing found and locally sourced materials. It's a labour of love. I enjoy passive recreation, hiking, biking, paddling, fishing, foraging, music, arts and crafts. Food production, cooking, preserving and eating are number one priorities. My future plans focus on setting an example for others to learn from, when it comes to living simply and being connected to the earth as well as building without a mortgage, a low-maintenance, low-cost lifestyle that is fulfilling in every way. I'd like to share this experience with a like-minded friend or friends. Once the lodge is complete, the intention is to install various artists cabins and a sauna, eventually developing my network of people to trade with and develop a community currency or become part of one that is in the works so we can thrive without the heavy hand of big brother. My focus is to build community, not to make profit, but just to have enough (which, is actually very little). I'm a two hour drive from the city of Ottawa. Four hours from Montreal and 20 km from the nearest store.
Yes, I certainly would be open to discussion. Can you email me at moonlyteonthepicanoc (at) proton.me ?
We are building a natural home and a permaculture food forest on six acres, surrounded by thousands of acres of public land. We like to hunt (deer, moose, turkey, grouse, waterfowl, small game), wild forage, grow vegetables, tend fruit trees, make maple syrup, trade and share with friends and neighbours, support local, ecological farmers, practice herbalism and natural healing, yoga, zero-waste and mindfulness.

The house is currently under construction. It's a 34x34 foot timber frame and will have two foot thick cordwood walls, an earth roof and an earthen floor. It will be heated with wood, from the property using a masonry stove and will have a large kitchen for processing food, cooking and preserving. We have composting toilets and rainwater catchment.

Off-grid and aiming to need only 800-900 watts of solar power to run all that we need. The long term goal is to create a place for family and friends to retire and live together helping each other. We are minutes from pristine lakes and are located on a small river with many trails for recreation.

We are arts and crafts focused, with an emphasis on sharing knowledge, skills and time with each other and reducing the need for cash exchanges. Food plays a starring role as well. We eat seasonal, home grown, or preferably ethically and ecologically produced.

We are seeking an artistic and creative individual, with building experience, an interest in permaculture, who enjoys hard work, outside with bugs, likes rough camping, living off the land and wants to be part of what we are creating.

A drivers license is important, as we are 20 km from the village and quite a bit farther for major supplies. A good understanding of basic carpentry is essential. Experience in any of these would be helpful but we are willing to help the right candidate learn; landscaping, vegetable production, hunting, fishing, foraging, cooking, smoking, drying, canning, forest management, tree felling, wood splitting and natural building.

Once the house is complete we will be working on a wood shed, a sauna and then some small artist's cabins dotted around the property where we each can have our own personal space, while using the house for meals, arts and crafts, entertaining workshops and growing plants.

We are located in West Quebec where french is spoken but we are primarily english speaking. This area is popular for winter tourism. We get quite a bit of snow and it lasts through the end of April. We enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and campfires in the winter.

There would be no wages, but, some of us work off-site a few hours a week to pay for the few bills we have. We encourage trading with friends and neighbours. We are not retired, and don't ever plan to with the way our governments handle our money. No rent need exchange hands. Instead we ask for your time and skill. All you need to pay for would be any additional food and beverages you wish to supplement your meals with, and your own phone and vehicle, of course.

Our immediate goal is to complete the roof of the house before the snow flies. At that point we can start installing windows and doors and closing in the walls so we can live inside while we finish it.

I'm sure I forgot to mention a pile of important details so feel free to ask. If the idea of this sounds intriguing and you'd like to find out more, we can talk about your experience and goals and whatever else we can share with you to see if you think you might be a good fit for our family.
