How does your garden grow?

Mostly with gray water and a few solar powered  hydroponic systems.

We also grow a lot of cactus.

Just realized that I have not introduced myself, my name is Stephen and I have lived off grid on the dry side of Hawai’i Island for over 5 years. Before that I was in the Florida Keys. I have spent years growing tropical food crops, mostly fruit. When my family and I moved to Hawai’i we had a dream of living off grid and as efficient as possible. I built a small house, no septic system, all water used 2 times composting toilets and a garden. We have recently bought an acre high up mountain in the woods to start a small fruit and vegetable farm to feed my family and make a small amount of $$. I am now a steward of a bit of land with plums, figs, loquats and cherimoyas. We recently planted some citrus and an apple tree. We are in the process of cleaning about 20 years of garbage from squatters.
The information I have learned from you all so far is great and I hope to learn more.

Thank you very much.

When I lived in the Florida keys I would just add it. No rinse off or anything.

I use a sunmar under the house system and have to empty it once a month with a family of 4 and used a bucket system before that. It is maybe 2 hours a month including dumping the compost buckets into raised beds(NOT FOR VEGGIES) to age. We have been doing this for years now. Not a big deal and we don’t dump sewage into the land that leaches into to ocean killing coral. That alone is worth it for me.

My partner and I recently bought an acre up mountain on big island in Hawaii at 4000’ and are in the process of cleaning it up. The previous occupants had thrown their trash all over the place and after the house on the property was burned down everything was left to be grown over. The amount of rotting wood that is left is going to be turned into a Hugel. The question i have is when stacking the logs, is it best to put the more rotted logs on the top or underneath the fresher wood?

Thanks for sharing this info and your advice.
