Okay I'm loving the thread about positive customs that are more rare now. And an answer in there got me thinking about positive customs that are being practiced currently that are newer to us.

What are some positive newer customs that you're glad of in society? What I like might be different than what others may like, and visa versa, but we can see different things as positive.

A newer custom that I think is positive is asking before we touch each other's bodies, like making sure someone is okay with hugs or arm-pats before touching them. I'm not particular about hugs or handshakes, but people randomly walking up to me and patting me on my arm or shoulder feels like "no thank you icky" to me and I've had to quietly put up with it a lot over the course of my life so I'm thankful things are starting to change with that.

This is a great point: I was introduced to this as consent culture, and respect for bodily autonomy.

I believe that this is an old positive custom in some cultures: teaching children from the youngest ages that as beloved community members, they get to learn and choose who and how they interact with others.

So as we grow up, we get to choose who we greet with words, who is a safer person to us whom we may greet with touch, and our "No" is respected when we do not wish to e.g. hug Grandma.

It's so empowering, and important.

I for one am thrilled that in many cases now the hug/kiss that used to be an obligatory greeting where I live is often now just a fist bump or a wave etc. The worst thing is hugging and exchanging face germs and then the person mentions that they just got out of the hospital, just got over the stomach flu, etc etc.

There's a lot less smoking of cigarettes in there used to be. And of course you're not allowed to do it inside. I for one appreciate that it smells a little nicer with better air quality. I have met just a few people that smoke pipes though and those smell amazing! I suspect only vanishingly few people do that now.

Calling before you drop by - even 30 min notice is appreciated! A day or two is even better.

I know my grandma was sad people didn't drop in unannounced anymore, but I personally love having a bit of notice so I don't feel like my house and my body need to be in guest-ready condition at all times.

I can see how the avialability and cheapness of the modern cell phone has changed this one.

I agree. It also helps that I live over an hour from town lol

something new-ish that I do really like is the ability to contact neighbors quickly and share info/images/camera stuff. We have a neighborhood WhatsApp group where we can quickly share with others that their alarms are going off, someone's delivery came to the wrong house, etc. There have been times when I've shared camera images when a neighbor needed them too, it's the modern version of the phone chain i suppose but it works.

Overall I’m not so fond of many things modern, and feel that in most cases the positive modern things are echoes of past customs, but anything to do with consent, equal rights, etc. is very welcome, as others have pointed out.

One can never be too kind to oneself or others.

I certainly don't like everything new, or everything old. Its a valid point though that maybe there's nothing new under the sun, people just rediscover things from wayyyyy back hundreds of years ago and think its new. I also don't dislike everything old or everything new, I like a bit of both and dislike a bit of both.
