Proenneke hinge - roundwood.wood.proenneke PEP BB

This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the wood badge in round wood woodworking.

This BB is for the construction of a hinge from a root.

Dick Proenneke of 'Alone in the Wilderness' fame was known for building a cabin and living alone in Alaska. One of his building methods was to create strong hinges from the wood of roots. You will be recreating his efforts.



The specific aspect of the film regarding the hinge starts at roughly 4 minutes in.


To get certified for this BB provide photos or video (less than 2 minutes) showing the following:

- Your chunks of wood that you are starting with
- Progress about halfway through, with the hand tools you have decided to use for this
- List any power tools you used (Otis would love it if you only used hand tools)
- The final product
