This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEA curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Roundwood Working.

Not every woodworking project is about making a tool. Sometimes they are just about having some fun. A very basic chess set offers hours of fun with a friend, expands your tactical skills, and making it is going to allow you to apply multiple carving techniques. That’s a win all around.

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
Carve multiple pieces of wood into simple forms.
Create a complete set of chess pieces and a board.
Make use of manual hand tools.

To document and become certified for this BB provide photos or video (less than 2 minutes) showing the following:
- Show the wood and tools you intend to use.
- Explain how you intend to differentiate between the ‘black’ and ‘white’ sides of the boards (stains, ebonizing, themed pieces, etc)
- Show the board and/or pieces in a state of partial completion
- Show the finished board set up.
