Summary

The catchup call between Paul and Alan Booker continues for another hour (mostly on Rocket Mass Heaters and upcoming events) before they decide to wind down for next time.

Paul’s plotting a future podcast to discuss 2022’s Rocket Mass Heater workshop in which the RMHs in the library, red cabin, and wood shop were either overhauled or replaced.  They learned a lot, but he wants to record a pod with the people that were more involved with the processes.  For the library RMH, they lightly tinkered with the core and redid the mass so that the vertical exhaust is now 6 inches instead of 8 inches and is now a lot closer to the barrel so that it is now a lot more efficient when it’s not running.  That is to say that it’s more efficient once run and heated up.

The next idea for improving RMH efficiency is a device that shuts off the exhaust at the ceiling when the fire dies and then un-seals itself when reignited.  The theory is that by shutting off the exhaust after the last of the burn gasses have been extracted, it’ll interrupt the chimney effect from sucking heat out from the inside of the mass and preventing it from sucking in more cold air from outside.  This last point however, might be detrimental to indoor air quality as it is now comparatively stagnant instead of being refreshed from outside, if the building is sealed with no other forms of ventilation.

Alan has been working on a permaculture design certification course that’s aimed at design professionals and thus expects either a stronger grounding in physics, chemistry, biology, etc., or a fair bit of experience in the field beforehand.  For example, Magdalene took and his PDC and apparently enjoyed it after being a Boot with Paul for about a year.
