Mud and Paul (and Andres) are keen to make an infographic about home heat choices.  Across the top will be types of heat.  And down the left side will be attributes/metrics.  With each metric will be a link to a thread that will act as a source for that row of information in the infographic.  Or, hopefully, a bit of a bibliography.  This thread is one of those threads.

Paul thinks that this work is so very critically important that he wanted to see if by starting these threads, the work can get started.  He very much hopes that you all will add to this effort so that we might be done in a tenth of the time than if it were just him and Mud working on it.

All of the metrics for all of infographic is focused on "average for montana".  Keeping in mind that the average montana home is 2000 square feet.

The row for this thread is Total cost of maintenance for 10 years for the following types of heating systems:

Electric Baseboard

Mini Splits

In Ground Heat Pump

Central Natural Gas Furnace

Central Propane Furnace

Pellet Stove

Wood Stove

Modern wood stove

Masonry Heater

Rocket Mass Heater

These are estimated based on average yearly maintenance costs, inlcuding a yearly (or twice yearly) tune up/cleaning and suggested extra maintenance costs such as a duct cleaning ever 3-5 years, or

Electric Baseboard:
Life-span of 20 yrs
You can DIY most upkeep (cleaning vents, blown fuse). You'll only need to hire a technician in the event of a major problem.
Any repairs that may need done during this time avg $290 if you hire someone

Mini Splits:
Yearly maintenance is required to maintain the lifespan 10-15 and the efficiency
$2,000 - $4,000

In Ground Heat Pump
maintenance costs $150 to $350 per year on average
$1150 - $3500 total

Natural Gas
$800-$1145 for the annual maintenance
500-1500 for duct cleaning (suggested every 3-5 years)

Propane
1000-3000

Wood Stove
(non-catalytic)
A lot is DIY and won't cost more than simple materials.
Yearly
Sweep Chimney : if you hire a professional every year it is $1,000-$2000 for the 10 years
Clean ash: free
Replace gaskets: The cost of gaskets is pretty cheap, you can get a gasket kit for $15  They should be replaced every 3-5yr
Replace any damaged firebricks: you can get them for less than $5/ea

catalytic stoves need more frequent maintenance. The catalytic combustion piece (the honeycomb-shaped bit) needs regular inspection and periodic replacement. If the stove is maintained and used properly, the catalytic combustor plate can last around six seasons.  You can expect to replace it at least once in 10 years costing  $100 to $400.

Pellet Stove:
should be serviced annually.  You can do this yourself or call a pro at the tune of $250/service, adding up to $2500 in 10 years
Replace gaskets every 3-5 years ($15 for a kti)
Igniters often go out after a few years and cost $150 on average to replace.

Masonry Heater
Maintenance includes sweeping of the chimney flue, brushing out the flue gas channels, inspection of the chimney and heater, and doing any repairs necessary
As for any kind of heater, you can call a professional, or do most things yourself. Get a copy of the Homeowners Safety Manual and Burning Guide for Masonry Heaters for free at www.mha-net.org.
A professional sweep can cost $125-325

I estimated the total cost for 10 years, fuel plus maintenance plus replacement, for a range (professional installation and 40-yr lifespan, up to self-installation and 100-yr lifespan). In case it is useful.

I didn’t have as much detail as you had, but you can copy the spreadsheet I created and build on that. Or use mine to check your numbers against. I may have messed up something somewhere.

This is re-posted from the main infographic thread.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1T8EX9qgD1IH_GW8rTOUFSVZ4hSlLZQQ8Db-HWiSZAOs/edit?usp=sharing

I think I got the calcuations.  I make lots of mistakes.  Spreadsheets are NOT my strongsuit.  But I think this one is 60% likely to be accurate.  At least it lays out my thinking process of how you get to 10-year numbers.

TOTAL 10-year cost with preparing for replacement, professional-install, lower limit of lifespan $26,210.00 $32,052.86 $49,393.33 $24,734.12 $32,819.12 $19,531.76 $15,037.50 $15,300.00 $52,850.00 $9,525.00

TOTAL 10-year cost with preparing for replacement, self-install, upper limit of lifespan $22,572.50 $22,127.35 $24,548.89 $14,418.48 $27,584.95 $17,976.57 $12,635.00 $12,916.67 $39,442.00 $2,258.75

The link takes you to the whole spreadsheet.  Let me know if it doesn't work.

The totals are costliest scenario (shortest lifespan of 40 years for the device, professional install) and cheapest (100-year lifespan, arbitrarily chosen, and self-install).  I added a 250 yearly surcharge for all chimney sweeps.  I averaged that over the % of people who would pay for that.

My favorite is a chocolate cupcake with white frosting and tiny ad sprinkles.
