This thread will discuss the suitability for all these heating systems to be off grid.

heat infographic we're working on here: https://permies.com/t/204534/creating-heat-infographic"

Electric Baseboard

no

Mini Splits

would require a huge amount of off-grid electricity

In Ground Heat Pump

would require a large amount of off-grid electricity

Central Natural Gas Furnace

no

Central Propane Furnace

would require a moderate amount of off-grid electricity

Pellet Stove

typically requires a small amount of off-grid electricity

Wood Stove

yes

Modern wood stove

sometimes requires a small amount of off-grid electricity

Masonry Heater

yes

Rocket Mass Heater

yes

Electric Baseboard--Not suitable for off-grid due to reuiring massive amounts of electricity.

Mini Splits--More efficient than purely electric heat until it gets really cold outside, but would still require a fairly large battery and energy production array to be off-grid.

In Ground Heat Pump--In ground heat pumps are generally central heaters requiring a large amount of electricity for large blowers, compressors and pumps. More efficient than purely electric heat until it gets really cold outside.

Central Natural Gas Furnace--Central heaters require a large amount of electricity for large blowers. Natural gas is by definition a grid connection.

Central Propane Furnace--Central heaters require a large amount of electricity for large blowers but propane can be delivered and stored off-grid.

Pellet Stove--Almost all require some electricity for blowers.

Wood Stove--some require electricity for blowers etc.

Modern wood stove--some require electricity for blowers etc.

Masonry Heater--super easy

Rocket Mass Heater--Super easy
