This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the
PEM curriculum. Completing this BB is the Iron badge in
Building.
Now that you've built all the skills, let's put it together and build a house!
Here are some pictures of what we're after:
Minimum requirements:
- At least 500 square feet (interior)
- Passive solar orientation/optimization
- Insulation is:
- Built to handle -10F weather
- R10 or better
- Mineral wool, or
- Straw bale, or
- Cordwood, or
- Straw clay slip, or
- Logs, or
- Any other insulation that is natural
- Interior wall surfaces are wood or natural earthen materials
- No drywall
- Exterior wall surfaces are wood or natural earthen materials
- Roof:
- 18+ inch overhangs
- Standing seam metal roof, or
- Living roof, or
- Wood shingles, or
- Clay tiles, or
- Slate, or
- Any other natural material
- Wood, tile, earthen or other natural floors
- Bathroom with:
- Sink
- Shower
- Toilet:
- Flush, or
- Composting, or
- Willow Feeder
- Electrical outlets and lights
- Primary heat is a wood stove, batch box RMH or masonry stove
- Main entry door above grade or otherwise protected from getting snowed in
- No wood on the exterior within 18" of the ground
- 90% natural materials by weight (plywood isn't natural)
- As with all PEM badges, lesser BBs can be harvested as you complete this project
Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 min):
- Place where the house will be built
- Foundation done
- Wall construction underway
- Rough electrical installation complete
- Rough plumbing installation complete
- Insulation installed (if applicable)
- Exterior siding/plaster/finish underway (if applicable)
- Interior siding/plaster/finish underway (if applicable)
- Roof construction underway
- Finished house (several interior and exterior views)
- If the unnatural materials you used are anywhere near 10% of the build, explain why you fall within the 90% natural requirement
