    About the video:

Follow Stephen, the Boot leader at Wheaton Labs, during our Chair Fixing Day, a unique Half-Assed Holiday. At Wheaton Labs, we embrace the principles of permaculture and homesteading, with a strong focus on repair, reuse, recycle, and upcycle. Chairs at our lab are not just functional items; they are integral to our community life and numerous events where people gather to learn and create. Unfortunately, with regular use, these chairs sometimes break or wear down. During our Half-Assed Holidays, we take the opportunity to fix and rejuvenate them, breathing new life into these essential community assets.

Why and How We Repair and Reuse Our Chairs:

     • Sustainable Practices: Emphasizing our commitment to sustainability. Repairing chairs aligns with our ethos of reducing waste and maximizing resources.
     • Learning Opportunities: Each repair session becomes a hands-on learning experience, teaching valuable skills in woodworking and sustainable practices.
     • Community Involvement: Chair fixing days are communal events, fostering teamwork and shared learning among participants.
     • Creative Problem-Solving: We tackle various repair challenges, from stabilizing loose joints to reinforcing weakened structures, fostering creativity and ingenuity.
     • Preserving Resources: By repairing chairs, we extend their lifespan, conserving materials and honoring the energy initially used in their creation.
     • Skill Development: Participants like Stephen get to refine their carpentry skills, learning techniques like creating mortise-and-tenon joints without metal fasteners or glue.
     • Resourcefulness: We utilize available materials ingeniously, for instance, using toothpicks to fill gaps in joints, demonstrating effective low-cost solutions.
