This week, we're delighted to have Geoff Lawton answering questions about his new DVD Urban Permaculture.

The promotion starts Tuesday, November 15th and will end on Friday November 18th.

We'll be selecting four random posters in this forum to win a free copy of the DVD.

Please see the Book Promotion page to ensure your best chances at winning!

Posts in this welcome thread are not eligible for the drawing.

Just to confirm
-The theme of all discussion and questions is exclusively the Urban Permaculture Dvd? in order to address G.L. or in order to win the dvd.
-The book promotion page link seems to return me to the general Permaculture Forum's page is this correct?
-If question #1 is true how do find appropriate questions in relation to the DvD's content, I wouldn't want to ask a question that's already been adressed within the educational material available.
. I pre-ordered in october and there was such a backorder it didn't ship till last week so I sure hope the mailman has something for me before Nov 18th

1) andrew is trying to fix the wiki now - so the book promotion info is currently not available.

2) qualifying posts are not limited to talking about the DVD.

On friday, I run an app built into the new software that will show me ten random posts, from this forum, from tuesday through friday. I will then pick the four best posts from those ten to get the DVDs.

I'm looking for good questions, good answers, good comments, good, healthy discussion.

Only accounts with an email address in the daily-ish email will qualify. Further, accounts with an obviously fictitious name will not qualify.

Geoff,

With the cost of shipping DVDs to North America from Australia not to mention possible region code issues, have you thought about licensing an American distribution company to produce and market your DVDs here? If you are interested but don't want to handle the details I would be very interested in helping with this.

Thank you for everything you do.

I'm having trouble finding that thread. I don't see anything clearly linked or mentioned from the Wiki, nor do I see a topic in the PF for this.

Can you please advise?

You have replied to "that thread", so you have found it!

If you were to, say, start a new thread in the permaculture forum where you asked Geoff about his "greening the desert" stuff, that post in that thread would qualify. If you then commented on the massive thread on hugelkultur, that post would also qualify and your odds of getting a DVD would have then doubled.

Does this help?

...bit confused here. Will Mr. Lawton be answering questions in any of the threads in the permaculture forum, or is there specific thread for questions directed to him? I looked and didn't see a thread specifically identified as such.

He will answer those threads that suit his fancy. I think threads with the subject line that say "OOOOO! OOO! GEOFF! OVER HERE! LOOKIT ME!" will get deleted by me before Geoff ever sees them.

It does help. I imagine I can remove my post from this thread and repost as a new topic in the PF to become eligible for the topic since no one has interacted with that question. Is that correct?

Thanks Paul!

I musta spent at least several hours over the course of a day and a half before I posted my question for Geoff a few weeks ago. I spent a great deal of time just gathering my thoughts together to ask the dang question. Then the podcast came and the questions weren't asked due to time. Now from reading this I get the feeling we're supposed to increase the postings here, but no guarantee that Geoff will even see them let alone read them. I think I will get my answer one day, one way or another but it's likely not going to be this time around. Geoff is a superstar and likely there's all sorts of buzzwords and excitement going on about some things in particular but likely nothing to do with my query because not many people would choose to start a permaculture project in a salted landscape. I appreciate the gesture to set up the forum for this possibility but I think I will wait to ask Geoff in person, when I meet him one day, if that ever happens. Meanwhile I'm just going to study for clues and apply some scientific study of my own to get my answer because I have so far never heard anyone who has the answer. Geoff alluded to how the salt in the soil in Jordan in the Greening the Desert part 1 got transformed and desalted due to the fungii. Insert insoluable. He used those two words. I think he may have the most information on the planet related to that process.

I'm going to take a leap of faith and just ask the question right here right now.

By: Tony Elswick

HERE IS MY QUESTION:

I truly believe as a student of Permaculture/Mycology that interfacing with mycelium can achieve us greater diversity in forest systems and microsystems of design. I am currently writing a law review article on mycoremediation in response to oil spills, I am also working on developing a recycling bin for plastics using P. Djamor. Since Mycelium is the nuerological response mechanism to pathogens in an ecosystem, could we channel this utilitarian counterpart to achieve greater success in sustaining urban communities? Geoff, in what ways do you plan on utilizing mycological solutions for not only restoration but diversification of natural resources?

some follow up info:

Paul Stamets has now patented a Entomopathogenic fungi that for 1 dollar service could get rid of insects in a house and revamp the pesticide industry. Shouldn't everybody have a mycolab in Zone 0?

Might be a good idea to listen to the second podcast you did with Mr. Lawton prior to asking questions to avoid any redundancies.

I mean I like REALLY don't want to ask something that he has already answered on the second podcast that you did with Mr. Lawton that I thought for sure would be posted over the weekend

I would hate to ask this fine gentleman a question that is on the podcast that didn't get posted yesterday as I drove around refreshing the podcast page every ten minutes throughout the day.

I would feel really bad to ask Mr. Lawton a question and have him take his time to reply to me only to find out that someone else had already asked he question but I had no way of knowing because I couldn't listen to the second podcast today while I was driving around.

It's like we're flying blind here.

Can ya throw a brother a bone?

Don't make me beg. Cause I will.

Hi David
as you ask " With the cost of shipping DVDs to North America from Australia not to mention possible region code issues, have you thought about licensing an American distribution company to produce and market your DVDs here?" Yes we are considering this and we have many links in North America with PRI USA.

Thanks.

I would love to see your stuff as a video download purchase. With the cost of HD space dropping my preferred format is now video download. Plus there is no shipping and I get it now. I know there are security issues to consider, but that's my $.02 worth.

P.S. I love the Greening the Desert videos on youtube and will be eagerly following your new project in Jordan.

I am really excited about the recent pod casts! I have taken away a much better understanding of how permaculture can influence more than just gardening. I have had trouble wrapping my mind around how I can use permaculture in every day stuff.

I think that if anything can bring peace to the middle east it will be permaculture :0)

it is also inspiring to hear Geoff's optomistic view of Temperate Gardening. I feel like I have permission to turn all challenges into positive options....cool!

Thanks to Paul and Geoff for sharing such a relevant and insightful conversation! I learned more about permaculture and feel even more inspired to go find my niche.

Hi Off the grid!
if your question has to do with fungi you may want to address it to Paul Stamets of fungiperfecti.com . He literally wrote the book on fungi (Myacellium Running) and has several theories on how they can save the planet! (see TED conference video here: Also, I purchased some edible mushroom growing kits from his web site and had questions...I called the telephone number on the "contact us" page and actually got to speak to a living breathing HUMAN BEING who was very helpful and informative! Good luck with you quest for info!

I posted a question about the permaculture school curriculum in Australia that Geoff spoke briefly about and it's ended up in the meaningless drivel thread, which I certainly didn't intend. Was it moved there for some reason or did I goof? if the latter, can it be moved to the permaculture forum or should I redo it? I can't delete it there it seems.

I am happy to facilitate something like that if somebody else will arrange an audience. But I think this would best be discussed in the "missoula" forum.

So I had to run the app twice to get 20 posts.

Out of those,
6 posts did not meet the naming requirements
2 posts were by Geoff
1 post was by me
7 posts did meet the naming requirements, but the poster email was not in the daily-ish email

This left exactly four posts for me to choose "best of". So, I guess I don't get to choose what "best" means this time.

The winners are:

Brenda Groth
Sebastian Debande
John Polk
Leron Bouma

Congratulations!

I will be sending you each an email to get your snail mail address so Geoff can send out a DVD to each of you!

My first bit of advice is that if you are going to be a mime, you shouldn't talk. Even the tiny ad is nodding:
