Hey everyone,

I just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Dominic, I'm 34 ,from Ireland, a place called Connemara in Co. Galway and my educational/professional background is in finance. I love nature, homesteading, beekeeping, sustainable living etc . I had a beautiful homestead that I had to leave last year. It was an old two storey Irish house, with land that I rented.

Right now, I'm planning on buying a house and land in Ireland within the next 6-12 months, so I came to this site for help, community and inspiration , and it would be great if I could network with anyone from Ireland.

I have my eye on a old house with 14 acres, so fingers crossed it comes to pass. So many ideas!

Thanks for reading,
TC.
Dominic

Hi Dominic, and welcome to Permies!
I hope the property works out for you. Things are a little uncertain on the UK side at the moment, so there may be more opportunities if this one doesn't come off. We have 6 1/2 acres of windswept hillside here on Skye which is gradually getting more sheltered as the trees slowly make progress.
There are a few posters from Ireland, and a few more from the UK on Permies. It's nice to see someone else from this side of the Atlantic, but so many issues are world wide. It's good to learn from others experiences whereever they have been gained.
Slainte!

Hi Nancy, thanks for your reply, and the other guys too , for your welcome!

Skye! So jealous! Yeah I can only imagine the battles with wind you have out there! Yeah, I'm trusting that the right thing will come up, I'm not going to rush it. Have my eye on this really nice old farm house with 14 acres, nice price, needs minimal work, but jusy found out something the other day, that the land or parts of it may be prone to flooding, so I have to check that out but will hopefully get up to have a look in next week or two.

There's another property that is a farm house too, ready for living in but only comes with one acre, the acre is brilliant quality and right on the house but, I just don't think an acre is enough to fulfill the complete self sustainable dream.

And lastly there is another one that is 7.5 acres, old irish cottage, needs no work and has a little stream/river on the land which would be ideal for hydro etc . It;s 2 hours away from my city though which is proabably pushing the limits in terms of what i'd travel for work, well it definitely is lol but I'll go have a look anyways, if the ideal place comes up, I'll just have to work around that.

Ultimately enough land to plant my own wood land and a source for hydro power would be ideal for me.

Anyways, sorry to bother you with my ramblings!

Thanks again for your welcome guys and gals!

Hi Dominic (and everyone else).
I don't know if I can legitimately call myself a homesteader but I am trying to grow veg, fruit, and chickens on just short of an acre down in Co. Wexford. I've been here for 4 years but there was a lot of work to clear old shrubs, bracken, etc. initially (plus a lot of work on the house. I got a soil test and have so little phosphorus it's almost funny. I spent the past year digging in barrel loads of horse manure from a local livery so fertility should be much improved this year. I also planted 21 blueberry trees and set up some raised beds and a hugelkultur that I will sow in spring. Hoping to get a polytunnel in spring. Oh, I also tilled a quarter acre and put it into native wildflowers as this takes care of some area until I can get around to it. It is also great for the pollinators. My neighbor keeps bees and I've certainly benefited from their lovely honey!
It's so great to hear from someone (relatively) nearby!

Hey Sara,

That sounds amazing  ! Horse manure is magic! I made my poly tunnel beds ands beg beds with nothing but well rotted manure, can het it cheap up here, paid about €250 for about 15 tonnes of it. I just left the ground as is, made my frames and filled with about 6 inch's of manure. Total magic, beet root, onions, courgettes the lot, my brother couldn't get over the growth.

Ah yeah the blue berry trees, I dont have the soil for it here, but would love to grow some. It'll be great when you get your polytunnel! So much fun! What are you planning on growing? Tilled a quater of an acre?!! Some woman for one woman! Love that about the native flowers, I keep bees myself, so loving that.

Nice to meet someone on the same island too, I'll give ya a follow.
