The only thing better than happy love songs is sad love songs. What are your favorites?

I can think of none better than "Hurt"
"I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair,
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair.

Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear.
You are someone else;
I am still right here...

What have I become,
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end.

And you could have it all,
My empire of dirt!
I will let you down.
I will make you hurt.

If I could start again
A million miles away,
I will keep myself.
I would find a way.

Looking up that video, I found this old one. One of the most hauntingly, beautifully sad songs ever written.

"I still recall the taste of your tears,
Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears.
My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore,
Scraping through my head 'till I don't want to sleep anymore.

You always were the one to show me how.
Back then I couldn't do the things that I can do now.
This thing is slowly taking me apart.
Grey would be the color if I had a heart.

In this place it seems like such a shame.
Though it all looks different now,
I know it's still the same.
Everywhere I look you're all I see-
Just a fading, fucking reminder of who I used to be.

Come on, tell me! You make this all go away,
You make this all go away!
I'm down to just one thing, and I'm starting to scare myself...
You make this all go away,
You make it all go away!
I just want something...
I just want something I can never have."

"Well, maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya.
And it's not a cry that you hear at night,
It's not somebody who's seen the light,
It's a cold and it's a broken, "Hallelujah!"

I did my best, it wasn't much.
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch.
I told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya.
And even though it all went wrong,
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my lips but, "Hallelujah!""

"I've been so alone for so long
Forgotten by the world
Forgotten to myself
Your effervescent eyes have awakened me
And brushed the dust away
But I knew you'd never stay

At night I cling to you, I'm so afraid
Afraid the day will come
And I'll wake and find you gone
But you promised that you'd not abandon me
And kissed my fears away
But I woke up to that day

I've been so alone for so long
I forgot how much it hurts
To wake up so alone

But I memorized how warm your body felt
as you lay half asleep beside me
And I memorized the way the sunlight
filled the room and played upon your body

I miss
God I miss
Waking up beside you

Of course! He did a great job, and his story behind doing it is equally as beautiful.

A Queen of sad love songs for me. And, featuring Neil Young on this version with the greatest rock n roll band of the 80s (Athens, GA bias). Reminds me of being forlorn in my college dorm room tears running down my cheeks listening to this hoping for love :)

Hooverphonic - Live at Rock Werchter 2006

Wake Up > Eden   ....the noted songs begin at 08:55 (or see timestamps in youtube description, though entire concert is worth a watch in my opinion).
I love how the they totally control the vibe of the audience, so intense!  Possibly my favorite female vocalist of all time ....take it away Geiki

Vinegar & Salt

...sometimes it's better to lie.

I always think of this song when I think of sad love songs.  It's really, just sad.   It's awful.  I remember hearing it and just thinking, dang, that's pure pain put to poetry.

Is it sad, melancholy, triumphant, disaffected, resigned, bold, brave? All at the same time?

For me, it's shed some light on what a womanly perspective might be on some of the stupid shit I've done.  I love songs that make me think from a different perspective.

And O the voices of Margo Timmons and Natalie Merchant, to-die-for duo :)

does it have to be human-to-human, romantic love? when i hear ‘saddest love song’ i think of this one: his romantic relationship is over…and she took the dog.

For you authentic, painfully earnest types, the saddest hurdy gurdy  song ever, when one has "mistaken brass for gold."

The first that comes to mind is Kronos Quartet and Natalie Merchant’s version of the old ballad, ‘The Butcher’s Boy.’ Utterly haunting.

I thought you need me.
This is what I thought,

You promised to keep...
Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep."

"Your eyes, your eyes
I can see in your eyes, your eyes...

You make me wanna die.
I'll never be good enough
You make me wanna die
And everything you love
Will burn up in the light
And every time I look inside your eyes
You make me wanna die."

"I piroutte in the dark
I see the stars through a mirror.
Tired mechanical heart
Beats 'til the song disappears.

Somebody shine a light.
I'm frozen by the fear in me.
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me!
So cut me from the line.
Dizzy, spinning endlessly
Somebody make me feel alive
And shatter me!"

The Funeral ~ Band of Horses

"To know you is hard"

My daughter & I have never really had a good relationship. 3yrs ago she cut me out of her Life completely, I don't even know where she lives so I quit mailing Born-day+Xmas gifts.

When we were communicating it was hard; I love her so much so I allowed the toxicity.
To know her was hard.

Funny, I didn't see Crowded House "Can't carry on this way". It was the theme song of a divorce.

...I need to free myself, from the burden of inaction
I want to raise myself, to any plane I can imagine.

Buddy Guy "Too broke to spend the night"
