I am very close to being fully retired where I will move permanently to my 11 acres of off-grid property in Humboldt County of Northern Nevada. In the meantime I am saving money and getting my Desert Rest ready for permanent living by putting in solar and wind power, installing a well pump, and building the first of several solar-powered small/tiny buildings on the property. That's kind of it in a nutshell. Many say, "You're too old." Maybe I am. "Are you nuts?!?" I probably am. "You'll be too old to handle the work." I don't believe that. "Don't you want to have fun when you retire?!?" I ask you, "How much fun is living under a bridge eating cat food"??? That's why I am excited to be here at Permies. People who have been there and understand why. People who will be supportive in a realistic way. I am a born and bred Californian and used to be very proud of that. Not so much anymore. But I won't get into politics. It is just safe to say the writing is on the wall and for those of us who want to live out from under Big Daddy and Big Pharma or see Environmentalists make my life decisions for me and make it so I can't live comfortably on my limited income. It's time to go and that's all I am going to say about that.
I can't wait to get there and build the Shadehouse to house the garden, chickens, ducks and a pond for swimming. If you would like to follow along I have just started a web site with a blog at www.desertrestnv.com and soon will open a YouTube channel. I wish I would have started this earlier in life but I didn't expect to be single so here I am. I look forward to meeting you all and sharing ideas.
Thanks for listening,
Sherry

you are never too old to start for below reasons,
You must considering farming has moments of exitement:
the first seed germinate in maybe 2 weeks and is an exciting event.
the first veggies you eat could take 4 month to grow and when harvested you getting exited for the taste,
Your new planted tree starts sprouting new branches,
The first tree flowers and bears fruit in maybe 3 years... Exited, when to pick for the full flavor
the first baby chicken (took me just 4 month) from a bad treated hen which I took over... the chick is so cute...
and so on and on...
well and then its becoming just routine and daily chores.. but still it will be exiting moments...
Below picture my about 8 acres which I started last winter in Thailand with an age of 60..

Hello Fellow Californian, Thanks! LoL The Kingdom of NYE that's a good one. I find I prefer small town ways but still have a need for the big city stuff. So I chose Humboldt County. I don't know about Nye but when I visit my property, the neighbors are super kind and helpful, and the townspeople are the same. Just have to ask and there is always someone who is willing to take an extra step if needed. Not the same here in Sac-o-tomatoes. They want to be big city and sadly has lost the small town charm. I moved from SoCal 23 years ago for that same reason and now moving totally out. Someone said they hear the Gov is trying to tax businesses who choose to move out of state. Greedy Gus, like that is going to help make the economy better here. Lower the darn taxes! I look forward to sharing experiences. I think your climate is hotter than up here in the North Country?

Thank you Trace, if you don't mind I may steal your response. So perfect. I saw the plans you posted for your greenhouse. It looks great! Have you started building it now? I have just started drawing up plans for my buildings. Do you try and stick to accurate scale in your drawings? If yes, what scale did you use? What I mean is did you chose a scale that would fit on one sheet of 8 1/2x11 sheet of 1/4" graph paper or do you just kinda wing it and write in the sizes/lengths as you go? I am using 1/4" graph paper thinking I could stick to a scale but does it matter? My thinking is I want to make sure everything will fit before I start building it. I am ok with having to tape together a few sheets of paper to make the scale work.
Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Sherry
