Lightening just struck twice.  The alpha is gone. His collar was cut off very near our property. Fortunately, he is chipped.

Worse yet , a neighbor’s Lab went missing a couple of weeks ago.  This area used to be very dog friendly.

We are in a “neighborhood “ that saw no crime for the 25 years or so we lived here. Now, it appears we are in a crime wave.

More frustrating is the neither my property nor the involved neighbor’s property is that visible from any road.

My two remaining dogs are very aware something bad happened.  They spend their outdoor time on the back deck, and want inside. This is unusual behavior for them.

But the chip isn't actually trackable is it? Won't it only help if he's taken to a vet?

What do the cops have to say?

Hi Jay,

You are correct about the chip.  Where it does help is if the dog is located, and the “new owners” say he belongs to them.  Law enforcement yawned until they learned of the chip.   I suspect they didn’t need a situation were the involved parties were calling one another liars.

There is another positive, we are a small county.   I think law enforcement may have a few ideas as to where to look.

The frustrating thing is that if he does make it back, I am going to have to keep him confined. This is a dog who loves to run through the fields as fast as he can.

Hmmm... I'd start looking for parts to make a dog-sized hamster wheel? I know it wouldn't be the same...  I saw a cool picture of a 2 wheel cart being pulled by a dog with a human in the cart seat, but the human looked to be on the smaller female side of the size spectrum. The road was paved and quiet, so that's a factor.

At least I'm being positive that alpha will find a way to get back.

If any of your local peacekeepers are the approachable sort, it may be worth asking if there's evidence toward what's happening with the dogs. Usually it's either druggies selling them on places like craigslist for quick cash or dog fight rings looking for new dogs. From the officer's interest in the chip I expect it's the first option. You and your neighbors might be able to track down where they're finding buyers.

Oh, jeez, John. I'm so sorry! I hope he escapes and comes back home - and much faster, this time!

Hi K,

You approach a concern of mine. I am about 100 miles outside St. Louis. Only pure bred dogs are vanishing.

Found the missing dog. He was within one mile from our house. He is dead …hit by a car.   He managed to walk out in front of someone on a less traveled road.

During the same 2 hour period he vanished, a soft drink can appeared in our driveway.  That by itself is coincidence….but the missing collar?  I suspect he got free and was heading home.

The good part of this is he was free and died on another adventure.

Damn. I'm so sorry, John. I'm glad you're able to see the positive. I'm incredibly glad he didn't end up suffering at the hands of some creep, but died doing what he loved best. Hugs...

Aww man! Sorry about that.

Our cat just disappeared a couple of days ago. Indoor-outdoor cat, LOVES our baby and toddler. We’ll have to ask around, but this happened to us once before to a similarly sweet cat who loved (loves?) people.

Maybe he’s dead, or maybe somebody took him inside… away from his two year old who loves him. I wish we knew.

I always think dogs ought to have a real purpose in life… defending their people and their animals and their land and running around a large area. Sounds like yours had a good life.

Yeah, agreed. It's harsh to lose a dog. Been there a time or three. Standing with you mate.

This won’t surprise anyone who has experience around animals.  I was gathering firewood with my old dog, and he wandered off. I played a hunch and was correct.   I found him laying beside the grave of his friend.
