We have a dozen people coming next week. About three dozen during the PDC (two dozen students and a dozen guest instructors). Then several dozen in july (permies staff gathering, coderanch staff gathering, etc.) And more and more and more.

With people coming and going, we need help. Somebody that can do a little cooking, a little cleaning, and a little bit of everything. Somebody with a head for this - and does not need instruction.

Somebody that can start right away. Non-smokers only.

Please post general questions in this thread. If interested and ready to come out, send an email to jocelyn at richsoil.com and tell her a bit about yourself.

Would you be open to a couple doing this? How much is the pay and how long would we be working for (length of stay and hour per week)? What would be the accomodations?

Thanks!

Is there a minimum age required for this job?

I can leave Ashland, Oregon on Monday to come but don't know how long it will take to get there. Two days? I have cooked, and cleaned professionally a lot. Plus I raised four girls and have herded chickens, so I am qualified. Plus I would not be doing it for the money, but money helps with traveling expenses. I am a Dailyish Blog reader and have been wanting to come for ages. I can sleep in my truck.

Jocelyn has asked me to add some clarity about this position.

This is a temporary position, although I suspect that if a person is really good, it could grow into something longer term.

This would be for spotty hours. When we have a lot of people coming and going, there will be a lot of hours with changing bedding and cleaning. Plus cooking. And when things slow down a bit, the hours will drop a lot - although there can be bounty work (little projects that need to be done), and it is even possible that there are other projects that could be done. We have good internet here - so it is even possible that you could help cassie with some stuff.

I think that the root of this position is cleaning and cooking. And when people are arriving, helping them get settled. If a person is REALLY good, we might even set them up with an email account and phone number to juggle who all is sleeping where.

But I cannot emphasize this enough: cleaning. cooking. and stuff.

Would you be open to a couple doing this?

Sure, cuz the work would get done in half the time, right?

How much is the pay

I would gladly pay somebody $16 per hour if they are great. See my threads about magic boobies and being a natural.

I could even see doling out bonuses on top of that, or making business arrangements that pay a lot more.

At the same time, I think for every person that is this good, there are 100 people that are terrible and want to be paid $16 per hour. They don't know they are terrible. They think they are great.

I have seen people get a LOT done in four hours. And then other people will take 40 hours to do the same thing and they will eat up 8 hours of my time along the way. And then the people that take 40 hours want a raise and, simultaneously, fewer hours.

When we did the kitchen commander position, we had a lot of people that felt that the pay needed to be a lot more and they couldn't possibly do the job in 40 hours a week. And then we had people the showed that the job could be easily done in 15 hours per week, thus making the pay-per-hour more than double.

Because I have been so very burned in this space, I think I am open to starting somebody at $12 per hour. There is a 90% chance that $12 is really too much, and I will need to try again and again until I have somebody that is "a natural." But I cannot find that natural unless I roll the dice!

I would like to think that a permie might find other values in being here. Meeting a long list of cool people and learning about our projects and maybe even participating.

how long would we be working for (length of stay and hour per week)?

Through July. Variable hours per week. There are opportunities for more hours if desired. And it is possible a longer stay could be arranged. We also have the innovators event spanning two weeks in October.

What would be the accomodations?

Variable. If a person was really good and started two months ago, we would probably arrange something really nice. As is, we have a series of events and everybody wants a bunk. So there are days where there are no more bunks available. And there are times when all of the bunks are available. Of course, I have developed a brand new pet peeve where a person that is paid to clean is actually creating the work for themselves. So while I am open to allowing a person to be comfy anywhere, I feel that the person in this role cleans up after themselves on their time. My reasoning for this is that if this person lived in missoula, and I paid them to do this stuff, then they would not be creating a lot of impact here that they would then be paid to mitigate.

Is there a minimum age required for this job?

I dunno. I haven't thought of that.

Bella was 17 when she was here. She was really helpful in a lot of ways. At the same time we had some people that were much older that turned out to be quite a burden.

Although this job would be too much for Bella, I think it is plausible that there could be a 17 year old for whom it could work. But that would be a very rare 17 year old.

One long day or two really easy days.

This sounds like the perfect resume! Did you email Jocelyn?

More clarifications:

We have what looks like it will be hundreds of visitors again this year, though not all at once. 5 this weekend. 10 next week. Around 30 for the PDC. About 20 or more spread across July (an average of 5-10 each week), and so on. See how it adds up to hundreds in a year?

We are not providing food for the entire PDC. Just instructors and special guests who are coming through for the PDC - attendees are on their own for food. So the cooking is for any where from just Paul and myself (and the cook!), to us plus a couple guests, to about a dozen people at a time. The way we want to eat is important to us, and to hosting how we'd like to host, and it takes time! Plus, special guest usually get a bunk, which means sheets to wash, and folks use the showers and poopers, which need cleaning and restocking, and somehow can't find the garbage can or recycle bins so there is debris to pick up; or use a tool, or build something and leave the tool and scrap wood about...etc.

I am concerned when folks talk about moving here from several (or more) states away. Plus, what we're doing changes on a daily basis. So I'm repeating that this really should be viewed as temporary and/or a trial period. We are not making any guarantees about a permanent position or hours.

Someone asked if shopping is involved. Could be.

It makes sense for the cook to do the shopping/food/pantry ordering and management for a number of reasons. Though I'm very happy to be involved as needed and some times just because I like food and cooking, too. Paul and I are particular about how we eat and the food must be organic or better if at all possible.

The other factor with shopping is that we are 40-50 minutes from organic groceries. We try to combine trips to town whenever possible, so a list is often given to whoever is going for one reason or another.

Keep your money. Just pay for my bus ticket (RT) and I'm on the way. I'm 68, a former chef and retired hobo.

Over the weekend, I e-mailed folks who had e-mailed me about the position with probably about 5 too many questions - sorry about that! Struggling to decide, but will do my best to do so by tonight.

One additional question someone had was about bugs here in Montana. I hear they're not so bad as the bugs in the midwest or the south. There is less moisture here, so less mosquitoes than other places.

We have a lot of hornets and wasps, lots of BIG beetles, crickets, lots of hover flies (sweat flies?), plus plenty of Western conifer seed bugs in the fall, and some tics, though not really any Lyme disease in Montana. The hornets have been pretty benign - except for the one I accidentally smooshed against my belly last summer. That one stung me, though it was understandably in self-defense.
