a permaculture forum is probably not the best place to relay this information, but .... while I have never seen this on actual TV (I haven't owned a tv in years) I have seen this from a friend's dvd.
And now, anybody with internet access can watch all of the episodes for free ....
Paul, I thought this show was like watching a crew full of Han Solos re-enacting old scripts from 1950's western serials. So many people absolutely LOVE this show. Can you tell me what makes it great to you? I've been told that I'd like the movie better than the show, but I haven't had time to check it out.
We have TV, but no cable. Ours has a computer hooked up to it though.
My favorite show was Space: 1999 and UFO (both Gery Anderson)
I also liked the original Star Trek a lot.
The first Star Wars was amazing and they get progressively less good as they go (this is a movie and doesn't count, I'm sure).
I have watched the whole series at least four times.
I am trying to think of why.... i suppose one reason is that the mechanic is beautiful. I was telling jocelyn a while back that there are no women in movies or tv that I find attractive and then it hit me: except for the mechanic in firefly.
Granted, the episodes with "Saffron" .... Saffron has her merits, but still doesn't come close to the mechanic.
Character development is good. Humor. The idea of the contrast of cowboys in space. Grit. A lot more grit than star trek ever had. In comparison, star trek feels like everybody is wearing pajamas all day and their problems are kinda wispy.
Pretty much everything Whedon does is brilliant. Firefly is a perfect little universe contained in 12 episodes and 1 movie. I wish he'd had a chance to take it further. And Kaylee is definitely the cutest one, though I admit I I might leave my life and fly away with Cap't Mal if he showed up at my door.
Buffy is a bigger commitment, and because it lasted 7 seasons it definitely has weak spots, but for me it changed what television could be.
Worst acting in an opening scene ever.
I like it overall.
For a society that one can assume had a huge Chinese influence at some point in the past (since they swear in Chinese) there are 0 Asians that I have seen so far.
I'm going to give this show a look, but I can't imagine a show with a more engaging subject than "Dexter". Anyone who has delt with hundreds of idiots, thieves or worse, can vicariously enjoy gory retrabution without the legal worries associated with vendettas
And on a rather different note, I bought the BBCs Human Planet series for my other half for Christmas, and it's truly excellent.
Here's the blurb - "Uniquely in the animal kingdom, humans have managed to adapt and thrive in every environment on Earth. Each episode takes you to the extremes of our planet: the arctic, mountains, oceans, jungles, grasslands, deserts, rivers and even the urban jungle. Here you will meet people who survive by building complex, exciting and often mutually beneficial relationships with their animal neighbours and the hostile elements of the natural world."
I watched the series on TV and was sorely disappointed when the TV execs did their usual stupid and killed it. I have watched it many more times since and have given the DVD set away to a couple of people and I also have the movie - which I do love. It is some of the best TV that had come along in a while and I wish there was even more.
I have this shirt from Nathan Fillion's effort to raise money for Kusewera
I have also enjoyed the Con-Man series that Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion did together - that was a fun Kickstarter. Lots of great cameos, to include Joss Whedon.
I think Paul's friend Andrew had the inevitable betrayal t-shirt (Amazon affiliate link there) which inspired me to find one for Paul.
I tried to get Paul a hand-knit cunning hat from Etsy one Christmas (I don't knit), but the creator was plumb out. So I ordered a Firefly brand acrylic one. I have a picture of Paul in it somewhere.
There are probably other forum threads that I "should" reply to before this one (do as I say, not as I do, and don't "should" on yourselves, people!), but I just found this!
