Fwiw, I've always appreciated the 'Townsends' perspective on 'the Old Ways', and he's covered this subject, also..

..Have tried this method, myself, and while the 'bowl-bottomed cast iron' is a little better than a skillet, the Ideal way (over a fire) is to either 'seek / encounter' (ie: Farm-sales / Estate-sales / Online, etc) a small 'Drum roaster' (as shown in that vid..) - Or - even Better.. 'DIY one'..

It's actually really Simple to make one, just need some thin-gauge (20-30 ga) stainless 'perforated sheet', ie: Stainless Perfed-Sheet, two #10 metal can-bottoms, some pop-rivets / tool, a long stainless rod / wood closet-rod section (as a handle) and 2x brass electrical 'butt-splices', ie: Brass butt-splicer to keep your assembly all together.

Of course, if you're 'handy with metal-fab' / blacksmith, etc you can do a Much fancier-job on all this, with a hinged-door to add / remove the beans, and more 'proper' ends for the drum and all, but.. It certainly is something 'DIYable' with just a few simple off the shelf parts.

Fwiw..

EDIT: Gaah, I posted this Before 'refreshing' the Page, and did Not see William Haines' Fine posts / handiwork - Outstanding, Good Sir! And yup - Exactly what I was 'pitching', herein.. Great Werk!

Welp, Update: S of Missoul-friend is gonna be out of the area that week - Something-something 'SCA'-something, I think, sooo..

Doesn't look like he'll be able to lend a hand, up yonder..  Sorry, m8. Hope things all work out as-planned.

Heya Paul -

Have a Friend in the "Area" (South of Miss. a bit, but "close enough to consider") Lemme chat with 'im / See what his thoughts are.. He's a Wildland / City Firefighter, so no 'stranger' to Heavy Equipment.

Will report back to Base, soon-ish. Cheers.

ProTip: Look for Pyrex Not cloned from China (ie: My 'Coffee Mug'...

..Made in Germany. Simax and Bomex are also good choices. But Non-Chi Pyrex is still viable.

1) Recommended this 'session' to a Friend yonder in Helena-area, but.. Not sure if he was able to tune in. Will have to get him to the 'Post-Op Summation', Thanks for that!

2) re: 'which three', well... My Vote (based on 'novice-level Experience') is:

- Potato 'eye cuts' / Sweet Potato slips from store-boughts..

Very-easy to get those going over and over and over.. Especially once you 'Go Buckets'..

- Summer / 'Spaghetti' Squash...

..and, finally:

Yup..

Super easy to get going - even in the Kitchen Windowsill - and then, Outside for real growth.

..and 'Encouragement Blooms from There'..

Catie George wrote:...but drying items is the tricky part since wringing by hand is so difficult.

Fwiw (For What it's Worth we got a Calliger 'clothes press' / wringer by Northwoods, ie:

..etc - Gets Most of the water out, and works way Way better than 'hand wringing'.

PS - Sorry about the 'Huge Pics' - Not sure how to 'scale down' to fit better, sorry! Also - Not a 'shill' or salesperson for Northwoods, there - Just posting a 'satisfied customer testimony'.

Then, of course, 'Line Drying' the rest of the way is the ticket. If you're in a Very Cold Enviro (like in Winter) where Outdoors line-drying is impractical, If you have a Wood Stove / Fireplace, hang near There (for Heat, obviously) and hook up a Large Box Fan to help circulate the air / promote evaporation, etc. Edit: Yep, near the Ceiling Fan also helps (but not Too near..

The Battle Can be Won.

Yep, very similar to Our recipe, + 1 for Castille soap - we Also added some 'Grated Zote' which works very well.

Sorry for the 'grave dig', here, but.. Didn't think this 'side point' warranted a Whole New thread...

Caught a marvelous documentary the other night about Paul McCartney and his post-Beatles band, Wings. Never really paid much attention to Pauls 'personal life outside / after the Beatles', cuz.. Why? Personally, I'm just not that interested in "famous people"s lives, etc. and, while I like Some of the Beatles music, certainly no 'screaming-willy Beatles fan', etc. Always loved, however, the Wings - Music of my Childhood.

Anyway, mentioning / recommending to watch (for those who have Amazon Prime - for those who don't, it's worth the 'trial' / cancel later, offer) because I never knew Paul was a total homesteader (!!) The guy had an Amazing little homestead in Scotland. raised sheep, goats, horses.. Gardened. Super cool small Farm / Homestead.

I always just assumed he was into 'luxury condos' / opulence, etc like most other 'famous musicians', but.. What a humble / down to earth guy / Family-man, at his core. Great story - Well worth a watch, in my opin.
